Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil- What’s the Difference?

We all hear the same question when we pull in to get our oil changed. “Do you want conventional or synthetic oil?” For some people,  the response comes quickly. Other times, it is like pulling teeth.

There are a lot of questions that you have to answer. What is the difference? Which is better? What is the price difference? Many drivers do not know the difference between conventional and synthetic oil. In the end, their decision is typically based on cost, leading them to choose conventional oil for their car. When it comes down to it, an important thing to remember is that cheaper isn’t always better.

The Difference Between Conventional and Synthetic Oils

The differences between conventional and synthetic oils are more than just what they do for your car. It goes way back to when they are drilled from the ground and the preparation it goes through before being poured into your vehicle.

There are several differences. Synthetic oil is known to have improved lubrication, better stability, and reduced breakdown. Many synthetic oils are produced with greater amounts of lubricant added, which decreases the wear and tear on the engine parts over time. Because they are made to last longer, synthetic oils can maintain that thickness at higher temperatures. This adds to the oil’s longevity as it will not break down. With synthetic oil, you don’t have to worry about changing your oil as often.

Conventional oil is known to be reliable, dependable, and readily available. It works well as an engine lubricant. Also, conventional oils are widely available in can be purchased in large quantities. To be sure, standard oil changes are still more popular than synthetic oil changes.

So, Why Choose Synthetic Oil?

So, what makes synthetic oil better than mineral oil? First of all, mineral oils have a slower flow going through the engine circuit. This can cause an increase in fuel consumption. Furthermore, it can impact the performance of your car. In addition, mineral oil has to be changed more frequently than synthetic oil. Many of mineral oil’s drawbacks come from its organic materials. While the process removes many of the impurities, mineral oil still has many organic components.

However, synthetic oil goes through modifications to prevent those drawbacks. Synthetic oil has impurities, but not as many as mineral oil. This allows this oil to be more effective when running through the engine circuit. As a result, there are many benefits to using synthetic oil. These include:

  • Less Fuel Consumption
  • Decreases Corrosion
  • Fewer Oil Changes
  • Flow Consistent In Varying Temperatures
  • Prolonged Engine Life

The only downside to these benefits is that synthetic oil is more expensive compared to its counterpart. Although mineral engine oil is still an acceptable and sufficient choice, a synthetic engine is certainly the best option for your car.

The proper circulation of oil through your vehicle is very important. Because conventional oil does not run as smoothly through your car, it often picks up deposits through its flow, resulting in sludge. When your oil picks up sludge, your engine’s performance is reduced. To avoid poor oil circulation through your vehicle, getting a synthetic oil change is your best choice.
